This work originates from my experience of living abroad as a “foreigner.”

Among the differences in language, culture, and skin color, it was the color of my eyes that most easily revealed me as an outsider.

Before I could even say who I was, there were moments when I was already defined by a single glance.

At that time, I often wished I could hide the color of my eyes.

I longed for an equal gaze, but in reality, “difference” was always perceived first, and that perception inevitably led to a sense of isolation.

In the work, layers of circular lenses appear in various colors.

The rainbow spectrum is often seen as a symbol of diversity and equality, but here it functions as a device to conceal difference.

Ultimately, the lenses cover the eyes completely, severing any connection with a genuine gaze.

“Is erasing difference truly equality?

Or, in the very act of concealing it, do we create new forms of division and isolation?”

The title Equality exposes this paradox and invites us to reconsider the meaning of equality within human relationships.

이 작업은 해외에서 ‘이방인’으로 살아가며 느낀 개인적인 경험에서 출발했다.

언어, 문화, 피부색의 차이들 가운데서도, 눈동자의 색은 내가 타자임을 가장 쉽게 드러내는 표식이었다.

내가 누구인지 말하기도 전에, 이미 눈빛만으로 규정당하는 순간들이 있었다.

그 시절 나는 가끔 눈동자의 색을 숨기고 싶었다.

평등한 시선을 원했지만, 현실은 늘 ‘다름’이 먼저 읽혔고, 그 인식은 곧 고립감으로 이어졌다.

작품 속 겹겹이 쌓인 원형 렌즈들은 다양한 색을 띠고 있다.

무지개색은 흔히 다양성과 평등의 상징으로 여겨지지만, 여기서는 차이를 가리기 위한 장치로 작동한다.

렌즈들은 결국 눈을 완전히 덮어버려 진짜 시선과의 연결을 차단한다.

“차이를 지우는 것이 과연 진정한 평등일까?

혹은, 그것을 애써 감추는 순간 새로운 분리와 고립을 만들어내는 것은 아닐까?”

Equality라는 제목은 이 모순을 드러내며, 관계 속 평등의 의미를 다시 금 성찰하게 한다.
